Overview

The goal of the Switzer Environmental Fellowship Program is to support highly talented graduate students in New England and California whose studies are directed toward improving environmental quality and who demonstrate the potential for leadership in their field.

The Switzer Environmental Fellowship Program is in its 23rd year of existence. The Foundation broadly defines its interest in the environment and the means by which positive results can be achieved. Awards have been made to students pursuing environmental policy, economics, land and water conservation, public health, journalism, architecture, environmental justice, business and law as well as the more traditional sciences of biology, chemistry and engineering.

The application process for the Switzer Environmental Fellowships is highly competitive. Each year, through an extensive application and interview process, at least twenty Environmental Fellowships are awarded, ten in California and ten in New England, out of an initial pool of well over 300 applicants. Candidates compete separately for Fellowships in New England and California.

Fellowship applicants are evaluated based on their commitment to environmental problem-solving and their potential for creating positive environmental impact. Successful candidates are innovators, leaders, problem-solvers, and they are focused on tangible results through their efforts. Applicants are required to have strong leadership, communication and critical thinking skills, relevant work and volunteer experience and the necessary scientific or technical background for their field of study. Past leadership and volunteer experience in community and nonprofit settings is valued as well as academic achievement, evidence of systems thinking and interdisciplinary perspectives.

The career and professional goals of potential Fellows are carefully evaluated. Candidates with a strong vision of how they will apply their academic training to a career in the non-profit, government or private sector are preferred. Candidates pursuing academic careers, while not discouraged, are required to demonstrate their commitment to applied environmental problem solving beyond the classroom or university setting. Switzer Environmental Fellowships are merit-based; however, financial need of an applicant may be considered to distinguish between two equally qualified candidates.

The Fellowship provides a one-year $15,000 cash award for graduate study as well as networking and leadership support to awardees. Switzer Fellows are highly talented professionals who have the ability, determination and integrity to effect positive change as environmental leaders in the 21st century. Only the most active, committed and focused individuals will compete successfully to join the Switzer Fellowship Network of over 470 Fellows selected since 1986. The Foundation seeks to select a diversity of students from different schools, programs, disciplines and career tracks in each Fellowship class. Diverse backgrounds and perspectives add value to the Fellowship Network by fostering learning and collaboration across disciplines.

Fellowship interviews are held in early to mid-May and take place in San Francisco for the California Fellowships, and in Boston for the New England Fellowships. Specific procedures and guidelines for the Switzer Fellowship application process can be found at How to Apply in this section.

NOTE: A complete application with all requested materials must be received by the due date for consideration. Only online applications will be accepted.

Fellowship Benefits

The Switzer Environmental Fellowship Program offers more than academic funding for Fellows. A variety of resources are offered to provide career and professional support to the Fellows during their Fellowship year and thereafter.

Switzer Fellowship Network

A significant aspect of the Switzer Environmental Program is the Switzer Fellowship Network. The Switzer Fellowship Network is a system of support, opportunity and exchange for the more than 470 Switzer Fellows throughout the U.S. and in numerous foreign countries. The Network provides a vibrant connection between and among Switzer Fellows, and other leading environmental practitioners. The goals of the Switzer Fellowship Network are to:

Support and reinforce the careers and efforts of the community of Switzer Fellows and facilitate their support of each other.

Assist Switzer Fellows in achieving positions of leadership and visibility in order to increase their effectiveness.

Foster collaboration among Fellows working on similar or complementary issues or sectors and to promote peer-to-peer learning and coaching.

Develop a community of Switzer Fellows who share in training, leadership, and networking opportunities.

Provide an interdisciplinary source of expertise from which organizations, government agencies, policy makers and media contacts can draw when expertise on an environmental issue is needed.

Switzer Fellowship Network activities include regional networking opportunities, issue-based meetings, webinars and conferences, and professional skills training. The Annual Fellows’ retreats in California and New England, which are open to all Fellows, are the keystone networking events sponsored by the Foundation each year. Numerous convenings and gatherings are scheduled throughout the year and Fellows are invited to plan events and programs.

Since Switzer Fellows are located throughout the world, Network communications play a central role in fostering a vibrant community of Fellows. The Foundation provides a variety of opportunities to keep Fellows connected virtually through a Switzer Fellows’ listserv, a Fellows-only discussion forum associated with this website, and online social networking. The Foundation also provides regular electronic news updates and feature stories about Fellows to the Network community.

The searchable Fellows Directory helps Fellows to find colleagues with similar professional interests or who live in the same geographic area. Fellows may find more detailed contact information in the Fellows-only section. Organizations seeking Fellows’ expertise can do so through the public directory. Fellows opting to be available as an expert resource to the news media can be contacted through the Directory as well.

The Calendar section of this website lists trainings and meetings of special interest to Fellows and colleagues, with Fellows-only events noted.

Career Support Services

The Robert and Patricia Switzer Foundation offers Career Support Services to help Fellows apply their academic studies to the real world of environmental issues. We help identify leadership development opportunities to best prepare Fellows for their chosen career path. The Foundation can also assist in finding other Fellows, or perhaps a mentor or advisor to provide professional contacts, networking opportunities or other guidance. The purpose of a mentor or advisor is to support and encourage the Fellow in attaining his or her career goals. Fellows can select a mentor from past Switzer Fellows and other environmental professionals listed in the Switzer Fellowship Network Directory, or suggest individuals with whom they would like to work. This is an OPTIONAL part of our Fellowship Program and is meant to provide access to professional contacts and career guidance from a perspective other than what Fellows might have available to them at school.

Other Switzer Foundation Grant Programs

The Robert and Patricia Switzer Foundation is committed to supporting and enhancing the leadership skills and professional development of all Fellows, even after the Fellowship year. The Leadership Grants Program is available to Fellows who have completed their studies and wish to partner with a non-profit or public agency to create a special project or position within that organization that applies their professional and leadership skills to a critical environmental issue. Professional Development Grants are available to Fellows after their Fellowship year for training or conferences that will advance their professional skills and standing. Funds are also available for collaborative projects among Fellows through the Collaborative Initiatives Fund.

For more information, visit innovation.edf.org.

Job Description

Commercial buildings consume about 25% of the electricity in the U.S. and are responsible for 18% of the nation’s greenhouse gas pollution. Office buildings alone account for about 200 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually, the equivalent of 43 coal-fired power plants. By 2020 the U.S. could reduce its annual energy consumption by 23% from business as usual if we implement energy efficiency practices today. However, corporate organizational barriers like lack of bandwidth and expertise, competing business priorities, and disincentives for working across departmental boundaries are preventing us from doing so.

EDF Climate Corps (CC) seeks to overcome these barriers and cut greenhouse gas emissions today while training tomorrow’s business leaders to create environmental value. Focusing on commercial buildings, CC fellows deliver a compelling business case for energy efficiency, and move companies toward cutting energy consumption, capturing savings, and reducing emissions.

As an CC fellow, you will be matched with a leading company to serve as an energy efficiency change agent. It is an ideal opportunity for students interested in sustainability, CSR, operations or consulting who are looking for an on-the-ground internship experience driving environmental change within a large organization.

EDF provides the following training and resources throughout your summer:

3-day training in energy efficiency strategies for commercial office buildings and data centers.

Climate Corps Handbook

Summer Call series with experts on topics relevant to fellow workplans.

Fellow check-in calls facilitated by EDF to share best practices

Access to online forums, collaboration tools, EDF experts, and up-to-date energy efficiency resources

Participating companies will be at different points along the path of developing an overall greenhouse gas and energy management strategy; some will require strategic guidance about long-term carbon management and meeting voluntary obligations in addition to an energy efficiency investment plan for one or more of their building(s).

Past host companies include Accenture, Bloomberg, Citizen’s Bank, eBay Inc., Grubb Properties, Houston Rockets/Toyota Center, PepsiCo, REI, Target, Verizon, and Yahoo!.

In the first three years of the program, Climate Corps fellows uncovered efficiencies that can

Save $439 million in net operational costs over the project lifetimes

Cut the equivalent of 958 million kWh of annual energy use — enough to power 85,000 homes

Avoid over 557,000 metric tons of annual greenhouse gas emissions — equivalent to taking more than 86,000 SUVs off the road.

Companies report that they are implementing upgrades representing 84% of the energy savings recommended by the fellows.

Each year brings new validation of our hypothesis that a smart and resourceful young leader – armed with analytical skills, relevant training, and a single-minded focus on energy efficiency – can overcome institutional barriers to energy efficiency.

Join us in summer 2011!

Selected duties may include:

Gathering detailed data about partner company’s existing energy usage through interviews with key employees, observation, outside vendors and professional energy audits

Modeling financial impact of energy efficiency investments in lighting, office equipment, and HVAC

Presenting the business case for energy efficiency investments to senior management

Advising on overall greenhouse gas management strategies
